Only Men Aloud Cycle to Sing at the Rugby

Classic Brit Award winning choir Only Men Aloud have agreed to take up their greatest challenge yet – cycling from Cardiff to Paris, arriving at the Stade de France in time to sing the National Anthem at Wales Vs France on Saturday 28th February 2015.

Leaving the Millennium Stadium on Wednesday 25th February, they will be joining over 50 other cyclists all raising money for Shelter Cymru. Ride to the Rugby’s 61 riders will do battle with the elements and ride 300 miles (480 km) over 4 days to reach the Stade de France, in time for Wales’ Six Nations Rugby match.

Last year Shelter Cymru helped 15,500 people with housing problems across Wales, and prevented homelessness in 80% of the cases where it was faced. In addition a further 300,000 people visited the charity’s website looking for advice.  Ride to the Rugby is not only a fantastic challenge for all those taking part, but through the fundraising efforts of the cyclists provides crucial funds to support Shelter Cymru’s vison of an end to homelessness across Wales.

Welsh Rugby Union Group Chief Executive Roger Lewis said:

“Welsh rugby has a proud heritage of song that follows the national squad all over the world and the WRU is proud to support Only Men Aloud as they set off on their 300 mile charity bike ride which culminates at the Wales versus France match in Paris next month.

“Only Men Aloud are talented individuals and huge rugby fans and it is a pleasure to work with great ambassadors for the nation as well supporting Shelter Cymru, a charity doing such positive work within Welsh communities. I’d also like to thank the FFR (French Rugby Union) for their cooperation and firm support of such a great cause.

“When thousands of travelling Welsh fans unite for the national anthem at the Stade de France, Wales’ reputation as the land of song will resonate loud and clear as well as providing a great lift to the national squad ahead of an important match in their Six Nations campaign.”

The event is supported by the Welsh Rugby Union and Shelter Cymru has linked up with Nation Radio, Gulliver’s Sports Travel, Creigiau Travel, Freight Movement Ltd and Sarn Helen Events.

Who are Only Men Aloud?

Only Men Aloud were formed in 2000. The group's aim was to inject some new blood into the Welsh male choir tradition. The group's repertoire is varied and eclectic, from Welsh folksongs and hymns to musicals and opera, from barbershop and swing to pop.

The choir won The BBC's Last Choir Standing in the summer of 2008, and released their debut album shortly afterwards, which went gold in the UK.
